Some sample definitions of expository preaching…

Haddon Robinson:

“Expository preaching si the communication of a biblical concept, derived from and transmitted through a historical, grammatical and literary study of a passage in its context which the Holy Spirit first applies to the personality and experience of the preacher, then through him to the hearers.”

Richard Ramesh:

“Expository preaching is the contemporization of the central proposition of a biblical text that is derived from proper methods of interpretation and declared through effective means of communication to inform minds, instruct hearts and influence behavior towards godliness.”

Sidney Greidanus:

“Expository preaching is ‘Bible centered preaching.’ That is, handling the text in such a way that its real and essential meaning as it existed in the mind of the particular Bible writer and as it exists in the light of the over all context of Scripture is made plain and applied to the present-day needs of the hearer.”

Rediscovering Expository Preaching by The Master’s Seminary Faculty:

“The message finds its sole source in the Scripture.

The message is extracted from Scripture through careful exegesis.

The message preparation correctly interprets Scripture in its normal sense and context.

The message clearly explains the original God-intended meaning of Scripture.

The message applies the Scriptural meaning for today.”
